The Department for Public Instruction, Karnataka has chosen the GNU/Linux operating system in Government High Schools as a part of its ICT@Schools program, and many other offices would also be seriously considering such a move.  Hence, in the interest of Kannada computing and spreading the use of computers,  an exhaustive study is made on using Kannada on GNU/Linux system with existing Unicode fonts and how they interoperate.
